Contact Lens Fittings in Knoxville & East Tennessee

A contact lens prescription is not the same as a glasses prescription — contacts sit directly on the eye, so they need their own measurements and their own follow-up.

Contact Lens Services

Contact lenses offer a convenient, comfortable alternative to eyeglasses for vision correction. At Tennessee Eye Care, our experienced optometrists provide comprehensive contact lens services, from initial fittings to ongoing care and management.

Whether you're new to contacts or looking to update your prescription, we'll help you find the perfect lenses for your vision needs and lifestyle.

Types of Contact Lenses

We offer a wide variety of contact lens options:

  • Weekly/monthly disposables: Cost-effective options with regular replacement
  • Toric lenses: Specially designed to correct astigmatism
  • Multifocal lenses: For presbyopia and multiple vision needs
  • Colored contacts: Change or enhance your eye color
  • Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses: Durable lenses offering sharp vision
  • Specialty lenses: For conditions like keratoconus or post-surgery

The Contact Lens Fitting Process

A proper contact lens fitting ensures comfortable, healthy wear. During your fitting, we will:

  • Perform a comprehensive eye exam
  • Measure the curvature and size of your cornea
  • Evaluate your tear film and eye health
  • Discuss your lifestyle and visual needs
  • Recommend the best lens options for you
  • Provide trial lenses and training on insertion/removal
  • Schedule follow-up visits to ensure proper fit

Contact Lens Care

Proper care is essential for healthy contact lens wear:

  • Always wash hands before handling lenses
  • Follow the recommended wearing schedule
  • Use only approved cleaning solutions
  • Replace lenses as directed
  • Never sleep in contacts unless approved for extended wear
  • Attend regular follow-up appointments

Why Contacts Need a Separate Exam

Patients are often surprised that a contact lens fitting costs more than a standard eye exam, so it's worth explaining what the difference buys. Glasses sit roughly twelve millimetres from your eye; contacts sit directly on the cornea. That means we measure corneal curvature and diameter, assess whether your tear film can support lens wear, check the health of the cornea under magnification, and verify the fit on your eye with trial lenses before finalising anything.

A lens that is fitted poorly doesn't just feel uncomfortable — it can restrict oxygen to the cornea and cause real damage over time. The fitting fee covers the measurement and follow-up that prevent that.

Specialty and Hard-to-Fit Eyes

Not everyone is straightforward to fit. Patients with keratoconus, significant astigmatism, corneal scarring, or a history of refractive surgery often can't wear standard soft lenses comfortably. Scleral lenses rest on the white of the eye and vault over the cornea entirely, which frequently succeeds where conventional lenses have failed.

If you have been told you aren't a candidate for contacts, it's worth a second opinion — specialty lens options have expanded considerably.

Contact Lenses

Fitted in Person, Followed Up Locally

Contact lens wear is an ongoing relationship rather than a one-time purchase. Prescriptions shift, eyes change, and a lens that fit well two years ago may not today — which is why annual follow-up is required to keep a contact lens prescription current.

We fit and follow contact lens patients at all five full-service clinics, with optical centers on site to supply your lenses once the fitting is complete.
