Do I need a referral to see an ophthalmologist here?
For most plans, no. You can book directly with our optometrists or ophthalmologists without a referral from a primary care doctor. A small number of insurance plans do require one, so it is worth checking with your insurer if you are unsure.
Should I see an optometrist or an ophthalmologist?
Both are doctors who examine, diagnose and treat eye disease, and both practice at our Knoxville clinic. Optometrists (OD) hold a doctorate in optometry and provide comprehensive eye care — exams, prescriptions, and the ongoing medical management of conditions such as glaucoma, dry eye and diabetic eye disease. Ophthalmologists (MD or DO) complete medical school and a surgical residency, so they also operate. How often should adults have an eye exam?
Most healthy adults should be examined every one to two years, and annually from age 40 onward. If you have diabetes, glaucoma, high blood pressure, or a family history of eye disease, annual exams are the minimum regardless of age.

Dilation is part of a thorough retinal examination and is usually recommended, particularly for a first visit or if you have diabetes. Expect light sensitivity and blurred near vision for about four to six hours. Most people can drive, but bring sunglasses and arrange a ride if you know you react strongly.
Can I be seen urgently for sudden vision changes?
Call (800) 500-4667 immediately. Sudden floaters, flashes of light, a shadow or curtain across your vision, or abrupt vision loss can indicate a retinal tear or detachment, which is time-sensitive. We reserve appointment slots for exactly these situations.
