Eye Care for Powell, Halls and North Knox County
Our Powell clinic on Conner Road serves the communities north of Knoxville — Powell, Halls, Karns, Heiskell and Norris, along with Clinton and Andersonville in Anderson County. For most of these neighborhoods, the drive here is ten to fifteen minutes against thirty or more into Knoxville proper, and it avoids the Kingston Pike and I-75 traffic entirely.
This is a full clinic rather than a satellite. Comprehensive exams, contact lens fittings, glasses and medical eye care all happen at this office, and our ophthalmologist holds clinic days here so surgical evaluations do not require a separate trip.
Families and School-Age Patients
Powell and Halls are family neighborhoods, and a significant share of what this office does is children's eye exams. Undetected vision problems are frequently mistaken for attention or behavior issues in the classroom, because a child with blurred near vision has no way of knowing their eyesight is not normal — they assume everyone sees what they see.
School screenings test distance acuity and little else. Our exams check focusing, eye teaming, tracking and eye health, which is where the problems that actually affect reading tend to show up. Our guides on pediatric eye exams and getting your child their first glasses cover what to expect.
Adult and Senior Eye Care
For adults, the pattern shifts around 40, when reading vision starts to change and the risk of glaucoma begins to climb. Both are why annual exams matter from that age even when nothing feels wrong — glaucoma in particular causes no symptoms until peripheral vision is already permanently lost.
We also provide diabetic eye exams at this office. If you have diabetes, an annual dilated exam is the standard of care regardless of how good your vision currently feels.
Doctors at Our Powell Office
You'll see the same familiar faces at every visit. Each of these doctors practices at our Powell clinic.
Insurance and Payment at Our Powell Clinic
We accept most major medical and vision plans. Coverage varies considerably from plan to plan, so call us at (800) 500-4667 before your visit and our office will verify your specific benefits.
Medical eye visits and routine vision exams are often billed differently, even when they happen on the same day. We will explain which applies to your appointment before any work is done.
Common Questions About Our Powell Office
Where is the Powell office located?
We are at 7714 Conner Rd, Suite 102, Powell, TN 37849, just off Emory Road near Powell High School. Parking is free and directly outside the suite, and the office is on one level.
Do you see patients from Halls and Clinton?
Yes, regularly. Powell is roughly ten minutes from Halls and fifteen from Clinton, and we also see patients from Norris, Heiskell, Andersonville and north Knoxville. For many of these communities Powell is considerably closer than driving into Knoxville.
Is there an optometrist and an ophthalmologist at this office?
Yes. Dr. Katherine Laney and Dr. Monica Perry are optometrists, providing comprehensive exams, contact lens fittings and the ongoing diagnosis and management of eye conditions. Dr. Thomas Browning, Dr. Matthew Lowrance and Dr. Sullivan Smoak are ophthalmologists, providing medical and surgical eye care. Between them, a routine exam, treatment for an eye condition and a surgical consultation can all happen at the Powell clinic.
Do you do school and sports physicals for vision?
We provide comprehensive eye exams that cover what schools and sports programs require, and we go well beyond a basic screening. A school screening typically tests distance vision only, which misses focusing problems, eye alignment issues and near-vision difficulties that affect reading and classwork.
Can I get glasses at the Powell office?
Yes. We have an optical selection on site including everyday frames and prescription sunglasses from brands such as Maui Jim and Costa, and our staff will fit and adjust them for you. Adjustments and minor repairs are done while you wait.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. We accept most major medical and vision plans. Coverage varies considerably from plan to plan — particularly between medical insurance, which covers treatment of eye conditions, and vision plans, which cover routine exams and eyewear. Call the office at (800) 500-4667 before your visit and we will verify your specific benefits.
How early should I arrive for my appointment?
Arrive about ten minutes early for a routine visit, or fifteen if it is your first appointment with us and you have paperwork to complete. Bring your insurance cards, a photo ID, your medication list and your current glasses or contact lens boxes.
What if I have an eye emergency?
Call (800) 500-4667 right away. We keep time available for urgent problems including eye injuries, sudden floaters or flashes, chemical exposure and sudden vision loss. If Powell cannot fit you in the same day, we will find the earliest slot across our other East Tennessee clinics.
