What to Expect During Your Eye Exam
During your comprehensive eye exam, our experienced optometrists and ophthalmologists will:
- Review your medical and vision history
- Test your visual acuity (how clearly you see)
- Assess your eye coordination and muscle function
- Measure your eye pressure (tonometry)
- Examine the health of your eyes using specialized instruments
- Dilate your pupils for a thorough retinal examination
- Discuss any findings and treatment recommendations
How Often Should You Get an Eye Exam?
The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends the following eye exam schedule for adults:
- Ages 20-39: Every 5-10 years (or more frequently if you have risk factors)
- Ages 40-54: Every 2-4 years
- Ages 55-64: Every 1-3 years
- Ages 65+: Every 1-2 years
If you have diabetes, a family history of eye disease, or wear glasses or contact lenses, you may need more frequent exams.
Children should have their first eye exam at 6 months, then at age 3, before starting school, and regularly throughout their school years.
